The Soap Brooklyn’s Sensitive Skin Community Has Been Waiting For

Sensitive skin is surprisingly common — and surprisingly underserved. Most commercial soaps are packed with synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and preservatives that trigger redness, itching, and flare-ups. Even some “natural” soaps use essential oils or botanicals that can irritate reactive skin.

That’s why we kept this bar intentionally simple. Six ingredients. No fragrance. No unnecessary additives. Just the things your skin actually needs to feel clean, calm, and cared for.

What Makes Oatmeal So Good for Sensitive Skin?

Colloidal oatmeal — oats ground into an ultra-fine powder — has been used for centuries as a skin soother. When activated in soap, it forms a gentle, protective film over the skin that:

  • Locks in moisture and prevents water loss
  • Reduces itching and redness from dry or inflamed skin
  • Gently exfoliates dead skin cells without abrasive scrubbing
  • Maintains the skin’s natural pH balance

We use two forms: colloidal oatmeal for the therapeutic skin-calming properties, and gluten-free whole grain oats for a light, gentle texture that polishes without scratching.

Ingredients Breakdown Table

Ingredient What It Does
Coconut Oil (Saponified) Creates a rich, cleansing lather that lifts dirt and oil without over-stripping
Olive Oil (Saponified) Deeply nourishing; mimics the skin’s natural sebum; ideal for dry and sensitive skin
Aloe Vera Juice Replaces water; anti-inflammatory, hydrating, and promotes skin healing
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) Triggers saponification; fully neutralized in the finished bar — no residue
Colloidal Oatmeal Finely milled oats that soothe irritation, reduce redness, and lock in moisture
Gluten-Free Whole Grain Oats Adds gentle texture for light exfoliation; visually appealing flecks in the bar

No fragrance, no essential oils, no synthetic colorants. As minimal as it gets.

Aloe Vera: The Anti-Inflammatory Boost

We replace water — the default filler in most soap recipes — with aloe vera juice. This isn’t just a label claim; it changes the entire feel of the bar.

Aloe vera juice is rich in polysaccharides and glycoproteins that calm inflammation, promote skin healing, and add a hydrating quality that water simply can’t match. For skin prone to redness, eczema, psoriasis, or general dryness, this is a meaningful upgrade.

Coconut Oil and Olive Oil: A Classic Skin-Nourishing Base

The soap base combines saponified coconut oil — which creates the lather and cleaning action — with olive oil, which is one of the most skin-compatible oils in natural skincare. Olive oil is rich in oleic acid, which closely mirrors the skin’s own sebum, making it especially nourishing for dry and mature skin types.

Together, these two oils create a bar that cleans effectively while leaving skin feeling moisturized rather than stripped.

Fragrance-Free and Truly Minimal

This bar contains no essential oils and no added fragrance — making it one of the safest options for people with fragrance sensitivities, allergies, or conditions like eczema and rosacea. What you smell is simply the natural, clean scent of oats and olive oil.

If you do enjoy scented natural bars, explore our Lavender Soap Bar or Vanilla Rose Soap — both are handmade with skin-safe, phthalate-free essential oils.

FAQ

Is this soap bar safe for eczema or psoriasis-prone skin?

Yes — it’s formulated with exactly these concerns in mind. Colloidal oatmeal is one of the only FDA-approved over-the-counter ingredients for eczema symptom relief. Aloe vera juice adds anti-inflammatory support. The bar contains no fragrance, no essential oils, and no synthetic additives that commonly trigger flare-ups. As always, patch test before full use if your skin is especially reactive.

Can I use this soap on my face?

Absolutely. This is one of our mildest bars and works beautifully as a facial cleanser for dry or reactive skin. For an even more targeted option, check out our Natural Face & Handmade Soap Bar.

Is this soap completely fragrance-free?

Yes. There are no added fragrances, essential oils, or synthetic scents. The only scent you’ll notice is the light, natural smell of oats and olive oil — completely neutral and non-irritating.

How long does the bar last?

With proper storage, a 4.5 oz bar typically lasts 4-6 weeks with daily use. To extend its life, store it on a Bamboo Soap Dish that allows it to drain and dry between uses.

Is the oatmeal in this soap truly gluten-free?

We use gluten-free whole grain oats in this bar. However, our facility is not certified gluten-free, so if you have celiac disease, please use caution. For topical use by most people with gluten sensitivity, the risk is minimal — but please consult your doctor if you’re unsure.
